ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly (NA) deputy speaker on Tuesday constituted a 10-member special committee to look into the cancellation of 485 cabins allotted to various parties by the capital’s civic agency.

The committee seeks to ask the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to restore the leases of the cabins immediately, as well as arranging compensation for the lessees.

“The committee, comprising five members each from the treasury and opposition benches, will complete its work within 15 days and submit a compliance report to the house,” said NA Deputy Speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi.

The speaker made the announcement after taking up a calling attention notice moved by Dr Ibadullah and others regarding the cancellation of allotments made between during 1967 and 2000 by the CDA.

Leader of the Opposition Khursheed Ahmad Shah suggested that the committee comprise of members from the opposition and treasury.

In a reply to the notice earlier, State Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmad had informed the House that the CDA had given temporary permission for the 485 cabins in 1985. Cabin owners had encroached on space beyond the 10 square-feet provided, resulting in inconvenience for pedestrians and vehicular traffic, Ahmad added. The minister also said the authority had cancelled all such temporary allotments in 2013, and served notices to all lessees.

“The CDA had also received many public petitions stating that the cabins were causing hindrances for traffic and pedestrian movement,” the minister added.

Ahmad said the Senate chairman has also set up a special committee to look into the issue and resolve it within 30 days.

“The CDA chairman and [Islamabad chief] commissioner will be summoned to appear before the committee to resolve the issue,” he stated. The minister also suggested that a letter be written to the Senate chair asking for the inclusion of NA members in the special committee.
