KARACHI:

A fire broke out in the building of Jinnah Sindh Medical College (JSMC), located next to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre in Saddar on Monday.

The fire erupted in an auditorium located on the third storey of the university. JSMU vice-chancellor Prof Dr SM Tariq Rafi confirmed that a fire broke out that was extinguished by rescue staff. He said no major damage was done in the incident. However, a committee has been formed to probe the incident, he added. Wooden furniture, equipment, air conditioners and university records burnt to ashes, said a fire department spokesperson. However, no casualties were reported, he claimed. The people trapped inside the building were rescued on time, he added.

The spokesperson said that it is speculated that fire broke out due to short-circuit but the actual cause has yet to be ascertained. Saddar police station SHO Muhammad Naeem suspected no criminal activity behind the fire.
