FAISALABAD: Rana Atif Mehmood, a former police officer at the Toba Tek Singh police station, was shot dead by unidentified armed men at Sant Singh Wala on Monday. Mehmood had recently been dismissed from service by the Toba Tek Singh DPO and his appeal for reinstatement was pending with the Faisalabad Regional Police Officer. He was notorious for being involved in suspect encounters with criminals in Faisalabad, Chiniot and Toba Tek Singh during his posting. Mansoorabad SHO Saeed Baloch said Atif had been a kabaddi player. He was on his way home in Sant Singh Wala from a match at the Madina Town Hockey Stadium when two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle stopped his car near the Sant Singh Wala railway crossing. He said the men shot him dead and fled, leaving their motorcycle at the scene. SHO Baloch said Atif’s driver was unhurt. He took Atif to Allied Hospital where the dismissed cop succumbed to injuries.   Police officials said Atif had more than six bullets in his chest. The body has been taken to the Allied Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination. Police said a team has been tasked with collecting forensic evidence from the scene of crime and a case would be registered on receipt of the post-mortem report.
