MOSCOW: A Russian airliner carrying 224 passengers crashed into a mountainous area of Egypt’s Sinai peninsula last Saturday shortly after losing radar contact near cruising altitude, killing all aboard.

A militant group affiliated to Islamic State in Egypt claimed responsibility for the downing of the plane; however this Saturday, Egypt pushed back against international suspicions that a bomb downed the Russian plane, as investigators said the cause of the crash is still unknown.

On Friday, Moscow halted all Russian flights to Egypt, while London has stopped British flights to Sharm. Empty aircraft are being sent out to bring stranded holidaymakers home but the process will be slow.

In the last 24 hours, Russia has returned 11,000 Russian tourists from Egypt, RIA news agency reported on Sunday, citing Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich. More people are expected to be brought back on Sunday, he was quoted as saying.
