Woman approaches SC against military court’s death sentence for cleric son

Anwar Bibi says no witnesses or documents connecting her son with the crime were produced during trial

ISLAMABAD: A woman on Saturday approached the Supreme Court against the death sentence awarded to her cleric son by a military court for terrorism.

Anwar Bibi approached the apex court through her counsel Asma Jahangir after her plea was dismissed by Peshawar High Court.

She contended that security forces took into custody Qari Zahir Gul, an internally displaced person from Bajaur Agency and a prayer leader at Jalozai camp, in 2011. The petitioner later learned that Gul was shifted to an internment centre in Khar area of Bajaur Agency.



Making the federal and provincial governments as respondents, Anwar Bibi claimed no witnesses or documents connecting the convict with the crime were produced during the trial.

The petitioner stated that while the PHC dismissed her plea over the unavailability of record of the convict, military authorities did not allow her son to engage a counsel.

The counsel pointed out the high court’s judgment was not in accordance with the directions and observations made by the apex court in its judgment in the 18th and 21st constitutional amendments case.
