KARACHI: The police took a key suspect into custody for his alleged involvement in the targeted killing of two senior police officials in district West in 2013.

Sir Syed police station SHO Syed Irfan Haider and New Karachi police station station investigation officer, sub-inspector Shahbaz Ali, were targeted in North Karachi on October 2013. Both the police officers were having tea at a local teashop near Anda Morr, when two assailants on a motorcycle shot them dead.

Federal B Industrial Area SHO Naeem Khan said one of those alleged target killers, Farhan Khan, was arrested during snap-checking at Rashid Minhas Road and a pistol was seized from his possession.

Separately, the police detained a key suspect along with his comrade in a nine-year-old murder case of a police informer, on Thursday. The suspect, identified as Muhammad Irshad, and his companion, Babar, were arrested by Federal B Industrial Area police. The police also seized two pistols from their possession and initiated further investigation.

SHO Naeem Khan said that the accused, Irshad, was a member of the banned religious outfit, Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), and was currently associated with a political party. "Irshad had killed a police informer, Ali, in North Karachi in 2006 after calling him to Baber's shop in the same area," SHO Khan said.

According to the SHO, Irshad murdered the police informer with the help of Babar, over the suspicion of him being involved in the sectarian killing of his comrade, Dr Naveed. The officer said that Naveed was also associated with the banned religious outfit and used to run a clinic in the same locality. The suspects later dumped the police informer's body on an empty plot in Manghopir, the officer said, adding that an FIR for his murder was registered at Manghopir police station.

Nabi Bux police also apprehended three suspects, identified as Shakir Khan, Kamran alias Nata and Waqar Hanif. The accused were allegedly involved in burning several shops in City Court area, following the deadly bombing at Ashura procession in Muharram near Light House Signal in 2009, said ASP Shahla Qureshi. Court had already issued non-bailable warrants for the suspects.
