'Century with partner' comment taken out of context: Reham

Reham quoting Imran says anyone could hit a six but real challenge is sustaining a partnership spanning a century

TV journalist Reham Khan made her first public appearance post her departure from Pakistan, and it was no surprise that every word she uttered was being vetted to gain insight into her divorce with PTI chief Imran Khan.

Speaking at the International Media Conference in Manchester, Reham, while quoting Imran Khan, said anyone could hit a six but the real challenge is sustaining a slow partnership spanning a century and a full innings.

“In the words of everyone’s favourite well-known Kaptaan, anyone can hit a six but the real challenge is sustaining a slow partnership spanning a century,” Reham said.

The comments were instantly picked up by large sections of the press as an apparent reference to Imran and Reham's short-lived marriage.  Following the press conference, Reham highlighted the irony of the situation saying, "Shameful that I talk directly to journalists advising an ethical approach in reporting and my comments are reported out of context."

“Everyone's personal life should be kept private at all costs,” Reham further said.

Both Reham and Imran made headlines across the world last week after announcing their divorce over Twitter after a 10-month long marriage.

Commenting on the media industry in Pakistan, she asserted that Pakistanis need to deal with the problem of 'laziness', particularly in the fields of media and journalism despite the industry being abundant in talent.

Further, she pointed out that Pakistani media does not follow important issues as breaking news is swept aside after one day. She also complained that the media focused on negative things, not highlighting positive news.

Similarly, just yesterday, in the first public appearance since his highly publicised split with Reham, Imran had a few words of advice for the media: stop prying into personal lives of public figures. The PTI chairman on Tuesday slapped down a reporter who questioned his ability to judge people around him.

At a news conference in Peshawar, the reporter had poked Imran on his supposed inability to judge people while selecting his close aides in either political or private life because whoever he selected ditched him in the end. Imran lost his temper and attacked the journalist instead of replying to the query. “Every society has some form of etiquettes. Every individual has some dignity or some manners,” he chided the reporter.

Imran said the journalist should be ashamed of asking questions about someone’s personal life. “In many households,” he added, “people go through painful trauma. By asking such a question, you have not embarrassed me but rather shown your auqaat (worth).”

Imran , 62, married 42-year-old Reham, a former BBC weather host and a divorced mother of three, in January this year in a simple ceremony at his Islamabad home. The two announced they had decided to divorce with mutual consent last week.
