Food Department: Sindh resorts to open market policy

KARACHI: Sindh food department resorted to an open market policy and sold 111,000 tons of wheat, worth Rs4 billion in October 2015, making this a record release of the essential food commodity. Sindh Food Minister Manzoor Hussain Wassan said this unusual release of wheat was because of an abolition of quota and open availability of crop. “Release or sale of wheat from government warehouses is still going on and purchasers are being facilitated through an efficient and transparent mechanism,” said the minister. Provincial food government warehouses and crop centres are said to be operational on a daily basis, except Sundays, from 8 am to 5pm.  Earlier, a meeting chaired by the food minister and attended by food secretary Laiq Ahmed extensively reviewed the existent food status and availability of crops in the province.
