ISLAMABAD: A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Wednesday disposed of a petition seeking Dr Asim Hussain’s hospitalisation after it reviewed report of a seven-member medical board that declared Dr Asim’s health condition as satisfactory.

Dr Asim, a former federal minister and the incumbent chief of Sindh’s Higher Education Commission, was arrested by paramilitary Sindh Rangers on August 26 on charges of terror financing.

However, Dr Asim’s wife, Zareen Hussain, on August 27 filed an application in the Sindh High Court (SHC) contending that her husband was ill and should be shifted to a hospital for medical supervision.

On August 28, Pakistan Rangers informed Zareen that her husband was unwell and asked her to bring doctors from Ziauddin Hospital, a medical facility owned by Dr Asim Hussain.

The doctors, who examined Dr Asim, declared his health condition as deteriorating and recommended his constant monitoring at a hospital. Later, Rangers shifted him to the National Institute of Cardio Vascular Diseases (NICVD).

The SHC on September 23 – on the reply of Rangers that Dr Asim Hussain’s health condition is satisfactory – declared that he could be discharged from the NICVD upon the satisfaction of Rangers’ physicians.
