‘I was nervous to share screen space with dad’

Shahid Kapoor says his filmstar father Pankaj helped him feel comfortable and both had fun on sets of ‘Shaandaar’

Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor, who will be seen for the first time alongside his father Pankaj Kapoor in Vikas Bahl’s romantic comedy film Shaandaar, says he was initially “very nervous” while sharing screen space with the veteran actor but later had fun shooting with him. Shaandaar hit the theatres on Thursday.

The film also stars Alia Bhatt in a lead role and is Shahid’s first film after his marriage with Mira Rajput earlier in July. “I was initially nervous to work with my dad but he helped me feel comfortable and after a couple of days, both of us had fun on the sets,” Shahid shared. “He doesn’t have any expectations. I hope I’ve lived up to Vikas’ expectations because he is the person I’m trying to live up to anyway. With my dad, it was an honour to share screen space with him,” the 34-year-old actor added.

Shaandaar is a ‘family film’ of sorts for Shahid as it also marks the film debut of his half-sister Sanah Kapoor. Asked whether he saw any hidden talent in her while shooting for Shaandaar, Shahid said, “Her talent is not hidden. It is there for the world to see. She’s so talented and so good. She earned this role on merit by auditioning for it. So, I’m very proud of her.”

Speaking of earlier films, Shahid mentioned that he didn’t take up projects that featured ‘quirky’ and ‘entertaining’ love stories after Jab We Met because it was “rare to find content which is unique and fresh in this space.” But with Shaandaar, he noted, “It’s something which I’ve never experienced before in films. It’s a movie that is accessible to everybody.”

Shahid added, “All the characters are new and the world that Vikas wanted to create was of a fairy-tale through a destination wedding. The film has been shot in different castles.”

Shahid also shared that after doing an intense film like Haider, Shaandaar was the perfect change for him. “After having done a film so dark and intense, it was the best and biggest possible change that I could make to go from a genre like Haider’s to that of a film like Shaandaar. I have a lot of faith in Vikas as a director. I feel he is extremely talented,” he said.

When asked whether Shahid is keen on showing the film to his wife Mira, he stated, “Shaandaar was shot before I got married. This is the first film of mine that Mira would be seeing. So, I hope that she really likes it and hope that it comes out as a good one.”
