Execution: Death row convict hanged

In Faisalabad, two men were sentenced to death for killing former market committee chairman

DERA GHAZI KHAN: A prisoner on death row was executed at Dera Ghazi Khan Central Jail on Wednesday. A statement issued by the jail superintendent said Saifullah had been convicted of killing his wife and a friend in Rajanpur in 1996.

The statement said his death warrants had been issued last week after HIS appeals had been rejected by the Supreme Court and the president. The jail superintendent said Saifullah was hanged early on Wednesday. Talking to newsmen, Saifullah’s sons Ibrahim, Abdul Kareem and Ismail said their father had been languishing in prison for 19 years.

“We spent all our lives without our father. He had already served a life sentence. Hanging him after such a long imprisonment is not fair,” they said. They said they had tried to reconcile with the family of the deceased but they did not forgive him.

In Faisalabad, an anti-terrorism court awarded death sentence on four counts to two men convicted of murder. The court sentenced two others to life imprisonment on four counts each.

Prosecution said Naveed Commando and his accomplices Nafees, Anjum Niaz and Constable Muhammad Tahir had shot dead Asghar Ali alias Bhola Gujjar, former Faisalabad committee chairman and his driver January 9.

After examining evidence and hearing witnesses, ATC Judge Raja Parvaiz Akhtar awarded death sentence on four counts to Naveed Commando and Nafees Goga and life imprisonment on four counts to Anjum Niaz and constable Tahir under Section 302-B of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).
