A glimpse into the world of Pakistani powerhouses

What sparked your interest in the fashion industry?

The fashion industry has been a part of my life ever since I was a baby. My mother, Farida Qureshi, has been in this line of work for the past 35 years. One of my earliest memories is of playing in her workshop. So I knew this was a calling.

What is the most important thing to keep in mind before designing?

You have to have a passion for it. Designs can’t just be made for the financial aspect.

How has the Pakistani fashion industry changed over the past years?

With the influx of big textile mills getting into the pret scene, mass production has been obtained which is relatively new in the industry.

What is your advice for the new designers coming in the industry?

They should be persistent and not give up easily. They can’t expect to hit gold right in the beginning.

Coming from a family of designers — Farida Qureshi and Faiza Samee — have you had the pressure or ease of working in the industry?

The market has been overwhelmingly competitive. And yes coming from a family of renowned designers has its perks and disadvantages. You have to rise up to expectations and constantly come up with new concepts.

One material for all seasons?

High quality voile. It can be worn in the summer along with trending accessories and during the winter we can wear it with a pair of trousers.

Any advice for women aspiring to become designers?

Start with smaller goals and work your way up. Nothing is easy. Persistence is key.
