KARACHI:

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested one of the senior general managers of the state-run Pakistan State Oil (PSO) over corruption charges.

FIA officers clad in white shalwar-kameez calmly walked into the PSO headquarters in Karachi on Tuesday and whisked away Naveed Alam Zuberi, who has also briefly served as the company’s acting managing director. The suspect has been shifted to the FIA’s Corporate Crime Circle for interrogation.

“We have arrested him (Zuberi),” confirmed FIA CCC deputy director Kamran Ataullah while talking to The Express Tribune. “He has been arrested on corruption charges.”

Zuberi has been made OSD twice. Being an OSD is a punishment for senior officials who are not trusted with important posts.

Zuberi was heading the Asia Petroleum Limited, a PSO subsidiary which runs an oil pipeline. Investigators claim more PSO officials are likely to be arrested for their alleged involvement in financial irregularities.  Zuberi is also known to be close to former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussain, who is currently in the custody of Rangers.
