Judicial Commission recommends elevation of two LHC judges to SC

Commission also gives one-year extension to four PHC additional judges

ISLAMABAD: Lahore High Court’s (LHC) Chief Justice, Manzoor Ahmad Malik and senior puisne judge, Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, have been recommended by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) to be elevated as judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC).

The SC’s Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali chaired the JCP meeting on Tuesday also attended by Pakistan Bar Council representative Yasin Azad, Federal Minister Pervaiz Rashid and Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah.

After the elevation of these two LHC judges, the strength of the Supreme Court will reach 16 – with one seat left to be filled.

Sources told The Express Tribune that the commission also proposed name of Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan as the LHC’s new chief justice. Justice Ijaz, appointed as the LHC judge on September 15, 2009, may remain in office till August 4, 2022.

SC issues notices to Punjab, federal govts

Sources revealed that the JCP also gave one-year extension to four Peshawar High Court (PHC) additional judges –Justice Muhammad Younis Taheem, Justice Qalandar Ali Khan, Justice Mohammad Ghazanfar Khan and Justice Haider Ali Khan.

However, they said the JCP deferred matter regarding the appointment of three Balochistan High Court’s additional judges.
