Gabriel Murta, the man in question, lost control and went into a fit of rage as tempers boiled over.
Murta was allegedly kicked and slapped by the players of Amantes de Bola, and their manager also invaded the pitch during the incident to demand a red card.
The referee, who is also said to be a policeman, rushed inside the changing room and appeared with a gun in his hand a while later and confronted the players.
Before Minais Gerais Football Federation could decide on the punishment, Murta is believed to undergo a psychologist test to determine his state of mind.
According to the Mirror, the Referees' Association boss Giuliano Bozzano said, “The Minais Gerais Football Federation has already summonsed the referee and a psychologist to a meeting and I’m going to talk with him today.”
“On the basis of that conversation and his account of events and the results of the psychological assessment I’ll decide what if any measures to take.
“What’s happened is obviously not a common occurrence and I don’t want to rush into anything.
“At the moment it happened he’s opted for getting his gun because in his view it was a question of controlling a situation.”
