Police funds case: Apex court reprimands Sindh IG for unfair distribution

The IG's report irked the judges, who found that funds had been disbursed among different districts disproportionately

KARACHI: The Supreme Court (SC) reprimanded the Sindh police's inspector-general Ghulam Hyder Jamali on Tuesday for unfairly distributing funds meant for the investigation wings in different districts.

The two-member bench, comprising justices Amir Hani Muslim and Gulzar Ahmed, was hearing an application regarding the withholding of investigation wing's funds by the IG and its disbursement for other purposes, at the SC's Karachi Registry.



During Tuesday's proceedings, IG Jamali appeared and filed a fresh report, the third in line, to justify the distribution of funds allocated by the provincial government to strengthen his force's most crucial wing -- the investigation department.

Earlier, the judges had rejected his reports twice, observing that they lacked the information the court had sought. The IG's report visibly irritated the bench members, who found that the funds had been disbursed among different districts disproportionately.

For example, the report revealed that Rs10 million were released to the investigation police in district Matiari. It further suggested that another Rs10 million were given to the Kashmore police while more than Rs30 million were given to the Dadu police.

"The operation against criminals is being carried out in Karachi and people are being killed every day," observed the bench headed by Justice Muslim. "The law and order situation is worsening every day [in Karachi]. But you [the Sindh IG] are more concerned about Matiari and Kashmore."



Addressing the police chief, Justice Muslim remarked that there is no improvement in the law and order situation, which is rather worsening with every passing day. "Your claims are just limited to media statements," the irate bench member told Jamali.

Expressing their dismay over the report, the SC judges ordered the IG to submit complete details of the funds that have been released by the police chief to each district.
