PM Nawaz departs for New York to attend UNGA session

Premier will address UNGA session on September 30

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif departed on Tuesday for New York to attend the 70th session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The premier is set to address the UNGA on September 30 as well as the meeting of General Assembly for adoption of the post-2015 development agenda. A peace summit will be co-hosted by Pakistan, United States and the UN Secretary General.

On the sidelines of the UNGA, PM Nawaz will attend a global leaders' meeting on gender equality and women empowerment organised by China and UN women, according to Radio Pakistan.

However, no meeting between PM Nawaz and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi has been scheduled as yet and no request has been received from the other side either.

Further, the premier is scheduled to attend receptions to be hosted separately by the UN secretary general and the US president in honour of heads of states.

Ahead of the premier's visit, the government was in a quandary over Washington's request to join its military alliance against Islamic State, which has established a self-styled Caliphate over large areas in Iraq and Syria.
