KARACHI: The maximum temperature in the city on Monday was recorded at 39 degrees Celsius and only one heat-related case was reported by the health facilities.

The mercury dropped due to the cold sea winds and the unexpected rain in some parts of Karachi, said the meteorological department.

The health department and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation set up 70 heatstroke centres across Karachi, following the hot weather forecast.

Over two dozen people, especially some elderly people, were brought to various hospitals on Saturday and Sunday, while one death was reported on Sunday evening.

The JPMC emergency ward incharge, Dr Seemin Jamali, said that a young boy was brought to the hospital with heat exhaustion symptoms. She added that he was discharged after a few hours. "The weather is quite fine, so we do not have patients," said Karachi health official Dr Zafar Ejaz.

He added that all the heatstroke centres will be functional till the weather becomes normal.

The Met officials have claimed that the temperature of Karachi will drop in the next three to four days, as the city is expected to receive light rain.

"The temperature in Karachi is expected to be 37 degrees Celsius tomorrow and 36 degrees on Wednesday," said MET official Abdul Rashid.

He added that the temperature will range from 37 to 35 degree Celsius for the next four days, and the metropolis will remain partly cloudy.

Giving details about Monday's rain, Rashid said that three millimetres (mm) rain was recorded in Landhi, 17mm in Gulshan-e-Hadeed, while the airport area and Saadi Town received a light drizzle.
