MARDAN: Former chief minister and Awami National Party Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chief Ameer Haider Khan Hoti has demanded the immediate release of Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM) Vice Chancellor Dr Ihsan Ali.

Speaking to journalists at Hoti House in Mardan on Sunday, the ANP leader condemned National Accountability Bureau K-P’s decision to take Ali into custody, saying it undermines his efforts to promote education.

The AWKUM VC was among five officials who were arrested last week for stripping parents and medical students of over Rs550 million.

“Over a short period of time, the VC has managed to carve a niche for the varsity,” he said. “The decision to arrest him is an affront to the commitment he has shown to his work.” Hoti said other countries hold their educationists in high regard.

“However, in Pakistan, we do not extend the same courtesy to those who are leading our country in the right direction. I strongly urge the judiciary to provide justice to Ali.”

Cheating the public

Other officials involved in the scam include Hazara University former VC Professor Dr Syed Sakhawat Shah, NIMS College of Medicine Abbottabad Chairman Dr Muhammad Aziz Khan, former Ayub Medical College principal Professor Dr Muhammad Ayub and HERA ex-chairman Professor Humayun Zia.

A day earlier, NAB arrested Ayub and produced him before an accountability court. He was subsequently put behind bars. NAB will file a corruption reference against him over the next few days.

Ali khan | 8 years ago | Reply This clown led the most corrupt govt of KPK in the history of that state. His brother is under arrest along with the former IGP in weapon scandal (go figure that). His late father was known for his erratic and somewhat eclectic life style not to forget that he was also known to get kick backs when he was communications minister. His uncle (Mr Asfandyar Wali) brought shame to the party, which was founded by legends like Wali Khan and Khattak saab. This ex CM is still roaming free and that is a shame. It raises questions on the effectiveness of authorities like NAB.
