LAHORE: The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) will install 105 new water tubewells. The project will cost Rs2.2 billion and will be completed in 2016.

WASA Managing Director Chaudhry Muhammad Naseer said that a team of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) would arrive in Lahore on September 30 to finalise details of the project.

He said that according to a survey, 105 tubewells installed in various areas of the city had become dysfunctional due to receding water levels. “We decided to replace the tubewells in 2012. We have been in contact with the JICA over the project and their experts have been visiting Pakistan,” he said.

“We have selected sites for installation of the new tubewells. We have also finalised the agreement with JICA in this regard. Under the agreement, the agency will be responsible for designing and installation of the tubewells. The WASA will provide the land and electricity connections. It will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the tubewells,” he said.

He said that the funds for the project would be provided by the JICA as aid. He said that work on the project will start within the next three months.
