Another successful kidney-transplant operation was performed at the Bahria Town Hospital, Lahore. All the expenses of the operation were borne by Bahria Town chief Malik Riaz.
A team of highly skilled surgeons headed by Prof Dr Jawwad Sajid Khan carried out the procedure at the facility which is one of the very few hospitals in the country that offer kidney transplant services.
Other team members included Prof Dr Zafarul Hasan and Dr Ahad Abdul Qayyum. The kidney for the 24-year-old patient Saddam Hussain was donated by his brother.
Bahria Town has set up a state-of-the-art kidney centre equipped with all the facilities to handle transplants. The average cost of a transplant operation is Rs1.2 million, but Malik Riaz bears all the costs of the operation for the poor and needy patients.
The hospital is also preparing for liver transplants for which it is hiring services of Dr Peter, a London-based doctor of international repute. He will be joined by Dr Andrew and Dr Mathews, both from the USA. An average cost of a liver transplant is Rs4 million.
Earlier Bahria Town Hospital used to arrange operations of liver transplants at Apollo Hospital in India. Malik Riaz has issued instructions to provide these arrangements here. Bahria Town has already established Cochlear implant centre for deaf and blind persons where hundreds of poor and needy children are provided treatment free of charge.
