DI KHAN:

A paramilitary soldier was killed and five others were injured in a homemade bomb attack in South Waziristan Agency early Tuesday morning.

Suspected militants detonated an improvised explosive device on the Wana Bypass road when a convoy of the Frontier Corps drove by around 7:15am, said a local administration official. The casualties were driven to the Scouts Hospital in the Wana Scout Camp.

Soon after the IED attack, security forces launched a search operation and called in air support. Residents and local administration officials said helicopter gunships bombed a market located on the Wana bypass road and later bulldozers razed dozens of shops belonging to suspected militants. A curfew has been imposed in Wana, they said.

Wana, which is inhabited by the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe and where the Taliban’s Mullah Nazir group has influence, used to be relatively peaceful. However, recent terrorist attacks have spread fear among the locals.
