Defence Day festivities: Over 150 athletes take part in various events

36 boxers and 45 martial artists compete for honours in Karachi alone.

KARACHI: Thirty-six young boxers from Lyari competed at the Inter-club Boxing Championship at the People’s Stadium in Karachi, as part of the Karachi City Sports Association Defence Day Festival, while 78

other junior boxers competed in Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas.

Sher Ali and Naimatullah clinched the titles for Faqir Colony; Sher defeated Muhammad Azeem 3-0 in the 44-kg event, while Naimatullah outplayed Adil 3-0 in the 42-kg competition.

Other winners in the 40-kg to 36-kg event included Jameel Kachhi, Shehroz, Nabeel and Muhammad Hammad.

“It was a great event, mostly because the young boxers got to compete and they were very excited,” Sindh Boxing Association official Asghar Baloch told The Express Tribune. “These young boxers need match practice to polish their skills and this event provided that opportunity.”

Meanwhile in the Ju-Jitsu Championship at the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Judo Academy, Nazar Mazari won the title in the 77-kg event by defeating Moen Zuberi in the final.

Zakir Abbas emerged victorious as he defeated Bassam Bari in 69-kg category,
while Umar Bashir and Owais Mubarak also recorded wins.

In the women’s judo event, Alina Ali bagged the gold medal in the 55-kg
competition, while Hurmat Mansoor was the winner in the 50-kg event. Muqaddus Mansoor and Maryam Javed claimed the titles in the 45 and 40-kg events respectively.

A total of 45 martial artists competed in the ju-jitsu and judo events.
