Ashfaque Hasan gets achievement award

Economic Cooperation Organisation praises economist Dr Ashfaque Hasan Khan's services.

ISLAMABAD: The Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) has awarded Economic Achievement Award 2010 to renowned Pakistani economist Dr Ashfaque Hasan Khan in recognition of his services in the field of economy.

The award was given to Khan during the 11th ECO Summit on December 23 in Istanbul, Turkey. Turkish President Abdullah Gul conferred the award on Khan, who is the director general and dean of the Business School of the National University of Science and Technology (Nust), Islamabad.

Presidents of 10 ECO member countries including President Asif Ali Zardari attended the award ceremony.

The ECO awards are granted biennially on the occasion of the organisation’s summit to nationals of member states in recognition of their outstanding research work and achievements. Awards are given in the fields of economics, history, culture, literature and fine arts, science and technology, education, agriculture and environment.

Other winners of the ECO awards were Abdul Bari Rashed of Afghanistan in the field of education, Dr Sohrab Shahabi of Iran in economics, Seidhappar Mama-dalieve and Minura Iesimbekova of Kazakhstan in agriculture and environment, Baisymakov Melisbek of Kyrgyzstan in science and technology, Faroghat Aziz of Tajikistan in history, culture, literature and fine arts, and Rasim Ozdenoren and Musa Kulaklikaya of Turkey in literature and culture.

Prior to joining Nust, Khan spent 11 years in the Ministry of Finance in the capacity of economic adviser, special secretary finance and director general Debt Office. He is one of the most experienced economists of Pakistan. He has the distinction of being the student of Professor Lawrence R Klein, the winner of the 1980 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.

Khan is also a member of the Expert Group of the United Nations to review the economies of the Asia-Pacific region. He was also awarded Sitara-e-Imtiaz for contribution to the field of economics and public policy.
