A glimpse into the world of Pakistani powerhouses

What sparked your interest in interior design?

I was always really passionate about it. The process of transforming a dead space into a magical dream is very intriguing and after graduating from London, I decided to pursue it as a professional career.

What is the most important thing you keep in mind before designing?

One must ensure a balance between practicality and aesthetics.

What inspired you to launch your own studio?

My brother Sameer had always encouraged me to be part of the family business. I had great support which gave me enough confidence. The idea was also backed by my own experience and skills as a designer and so, Address was formed.

How has Pakistani interior design changed over the past years?

I think over the years, the niche segment has emphasised improving living standards. This has had an indirect effect on interior design, putting pressure on designers to offer an individualistic approach to cater to growing needs.

How challenging is it to manage your work with your personal life?

Of course it is challenging but then again, ‘no pain no gain’.

Have you thought about collaborations with people from various different fields, such as fashion? Is there anyone that you would like to work with?

Yes, I had spoken to people from the fashion and photography sectors before, regarding collaborations. But I feel there has to be a right time to work in synergy.

What is the hardest part about working in the industry?

The hardest part of being in this industry is convincing customers to think outside the box and breaking the monotony they have been seeing over and over! To a creative person, it becomes mundane and obsolete.

Who has inspired you the most throughout your career?

My former boss Naheed Mashooqullah has really helped me throughout. She was also the first interior designer my family hired for our residence.

Any advice to other young women aspiring to become interior designers?

Be true to yourself and original in your work. Also, don’t chase success too much. If you love what you do, just keep at it and success will follow suit.
