Even children who have been vaccinated against measles are at risk, health experts told The Express Tribune. EPI acting deputy director Dr Tahir said a blood test should be carried out when rashes start to appear on the skin and the patient runs a fever or flu.

However, he added parents seldom understand the symptoms and give their children medicines that are for fever alone which also leads to complications. He added one cannot diagnose the disease unless blood test results are examined.

He said parents should consult specialists and have their children checked. “We collect blood samples of infected children and send them to National Institute of Health, Islamabad for tests and the results take around two to three weeks to arrive.” He added the more samples the laboratory has, the more the results are delayed.
