BAHAWALPUR:

A sub-inspector was suspended from service on Saturday for failing to register an abduction and gang-rape complaint.

Rahim* told newsmen that his son, who had worked as a carpenter’s apprentice, was told to go to Akbar’s house on Monday to repair some furniture.

He said Irfan and his accomplices abducted his son, drugged him and raped him.

“After he fainted, they dumped him near the shop and fled,” he said.

“I took him to a hospital and later to the police post in Tallewali to file a complaint,” he said.

He said the police officials ridiculed him and his son. “They asked for Rs50,000 to register the FIR,” he said. He said he did not have the money and returned home to figure out a way to press the complaint.

He said on Friday, his son jumped in front of a freight train and died on the spot.

His Chak-2P neighbours placed the body to a main road and blocked it for traffic.

They chanted slogans against police and demanded that the post in charge be suspended from service and the rapists arrested.

Khanpur DSP Syed Jamshed Ali Shah and Saddar Khanpur SHO Muhammad Arshad Khan met the protesters and told them that the check post in-charge had been suspended.

They told the protesters that a team had been formed to arrest the suspects. Later, a police spokesman told newsmen that Irfan had been arrested.

DPO Rahim Yar Khan Tariq Elahi Mastoi and MNA Sheikh Fayazuddin met the family of the deceased and assured them that the case would be fairly investigated and prosecuted.
