A police official told The Express Tribune there were reports of terrorists planning to attack the dam after which officials visited the area and inspected security arrangements. “Around 150 soldiers have been deployed at the hilltop, while Wapda has stationed 226 of its guards to protect the reservoir,” he said. Additionally, around 3,000 army personnel have also been deployed in the area.
“The operation in the tribal belt and the police crackdown against terrorists has been fairly successful. However, this does not mean terrorist activities have been completely eradicated,” a police official said. Terrorists, however, are on the defensive and are ready to hit back where least expected, he said. The policeman added this was evident from the APS attack on December 16, 2014.
“They have tried to carry out several terrorist attacks. However, tight security in the region has deterred them,” he said, adding that cantonment area in the city is also put on high alert.
Warsak Dam is located between Khyber Agency and Mohmand Agency.
