ISLAMABAD: Climate change will affect water resources and impact water systems in countries across the world, said an Asian Development Bank (ADB) analyst on water sector. “Regional studies have shown that as climate change continues, we will see its most significant destabilisation impact on the Asia and Pacific region,” said Vijay Padmanabhan. Based on ADB data, around 1.1 billion people predicted are living without adequate access to drinking water, almost 70% of whom are in the Asia and Pacific region. The ADB predicts that water needs for industrial purposes will increase by 65% by 2030, while water needs for household purposes and the agriculture sector will increase by 30% and 5%, respectively, by that year. The ADB says providing food, energy, safe drinking water and access to sanitation without compromising the environment will be more challenging.
