FAISALABAD:

A three-year-old boy drowned in a drain in Chak Jhumra, police said on Monday.

The Chak Jhumra SHO told The Express Tribune Mujtaba Haidar, a resident of Mubarakpura, was playing with his friends when he slipped into a nearby sewage drain. Some passers-by gathered there when the children called for help.

Haider’s body was later found two kilometres away from the site he had drowned. His parents and residents of the area staged a protest demonstration against the city government for leaving the drain uncovered.

“We have requested the tehsil municipal administration several times to cover the drain but they have not done so,” Akhtar Habib, one of the protesters, said. He said the drain had always been a hazard for the children of the area.

A police team met with the protesters and assured them that action would be taken on their complaint. The protesters then called off their demonstration.
