
Police should promote community policing to improve the law and order situation, Governor Rafiq Rajwana said on Saturday.
“The government has introduced several reforms at the Police Department. Effective implementation of these is the need of the hour,” the governor told a meeting that reviewed the security situation and several development projects.
RPO Tariq Masud Yasin, Commissioner Asadullah Khan, DCO Zahid Salim Gondal and CPO Azhar Ikram attended the meeting.
Rajwana said peace was a prerequisite for the national institutions to perform well. He said providing protection to citizens should be police’s top priority. He ordered that all development projects be completed in time. He said the quality of construction must not be compromised.
Earlier, Yasin briefed the governor about steps taken to improve the performance of police stations. He said reception desks had been established at all police stations in the region providing separate sitting arrangements for male and female complainants.
Addressing lawyers at the Multan District Bar Association, Rajwana said Pakistan Army had rendered great sacrifices in the country’s war on terrorism. He said peace would be restored soon. He said Nishtar Medical College would be given the status of a health university with the induction of a new teaching hospital, a kidney centre, a cancer hospital and upgrade of the Multan Institute of Cardiology.
The governor said the government had taken all stakeholders on board on national issues, including the Pakistan-China Economic Corridor. He said the government was focusing on the development of southern Punjab. He said a new sewerage system would be laid in Multan to rid the city of sewerage-related problems. The Multan Children Complex would be upgraded soon, he said. He said he would do his best to arrange Rs100 million for lawyers’ benevolent fund.
The governor asked lawyers to dress well for appearance in courts. He also said they should improve their English.
Police
RPO Yasin has ordered Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran and Vehari police to adopt modern techniques to curb crime. He said police in the four districts had been equipped with modern gadgets. The RPO was addressing investigation officers from the four cities. He reviewed progress on several cases under investigation. He said Homicide Units had been equipped with modern equipment and competent investigators. He said he hoped that the units would help curb crime in the region.
