LUMUN : ‘Our world, our future’

1,000 students to attend the model conference from Pakistan, abroad.

LAHORE: The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) starts its seventh annual Model United Nations Conference on Thursday with the Express Media Group as its media partner.

The conference, themed ‘Our world, our future’, will run till December 26 on the LUMS campus. Wednesday is registration day for the conference, which will be officially inaugurated on Thursday with an opening address from LUMUN patron and former ambassador Shehryar Khan, said LUMUN President Ayesha Waqar. It will close with a speech by the French ambassador to Pakistan on Sunday.

LUMUN Media Advisor Dania Mukhtiar said the conference attracts around a thousand students from universities and schools all over Pakistan and abroad. “It is one of the largest student gatherings not only in Pakistan, but in the entire subcontinent,” she said.

She said that at the conference, the students would simulate 16 committees of the United Nations and try to resolves issues that are faced by the global community today. “Apart from the usual committees we’ll have specialised sessions dealing with some of the country’s most pressing problems,” she added. There will also be various evening events, such as a concert and dinner.

Other distinguished guests at the conference will be Syed Babar Ali, the pro chancellor of LUMS, at the opening ceremony on Thursday; Imran Khan, Shehzad Roy, Atif Aslam and Rafay Alam on Friday; and Hina Jillani on Dec 26.

On Wednesday, the delegates will get the chance to register, get information about the conference, meet the heads of delegations, and watch a movie called Global Zero, which advocates the elimination of nuclear weapons.
