Pakistan begins work on 700-km pipeline to import LNG from China

Chinese funds will benefit Pakistan and allow it to complete its Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline project

Aiming to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) from China, Pakistan has started construction of its seven hundred-kilometer pipeline, Radio Pakistan reported.

Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbasi while addressing the media, stated that the project will be jointly funded by Pakistan and China.

"Chinese funds will benefit Pakistan and allow it to complete its Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline project," Abbasi added.

According to Abbasi, Pakistan has been trying to overcome its energy crisis by importing gas from Iran however, sanctions on Iran had hampered the work on the project.

Further stating that Gwadar port being the central hub for China Pakistan Economic Corridor, will allow Western China to gain access to warm waters.

Tahir Jawaid | 9 years ago | Reply In Pakistan power sector there is classic discussion why not hydro. Good option for Pakistan and has potential for.dams and run of river projects. Despite this we will need thermal for base load be it coal or gas as hydro cannot work whole year long due to water avails.

Many politicians, unless they have vision, don't want to wait for 6 to 7 years for a project to complete and generate electricity. Alternatives such as importing gas and laying a distribution network are faster and, can show results during current term of a ruling party. This in turn will give bragging rights to incumbent PM for next elections.

Babloo | 9 years ago | Reply China has excess gas in its north western muslim province , where islam is virtually banned. Transportation from north-west china to eastern china is not cost effective. So sell it to captive pakistani market , where it can dictate terms. Good deal for China. Well done.

ddoraiz shamsi | 9 years ago | Reply Pipelines coming to Pakistan from every side, if polititions are to be believed Pakistan will supply electricity to every corner of the word, But in the name of God why they don't work on hydroelectric projects, single hydroelectric project will be enough to fill the shortfall, why ? why ? does any one have the answer ?

Tahir Jawaid | 9 years ago | Reply Somehow our reporter's do not fully understand the issues this create inconsistency in their reporting thus cause confusion. My understanding of news is as follows: China under CPEC initiative will help Pakistan to develop a LNG terminal at GWADAR which is storage and re-gassification unit. Gas from the terminal Will be transported through a 700 km pipeline and get connected to the main piplines for distribution. With this pipeline in place IPI connection will be 200 km away and when we are ready to import from Iran the small portion will be laid. LNG will be imported primarily from gulf countries like Qatar, rightly pointed China is an importer of LNG. This approach will address both energy sources and also create backup for each other. How and when this implementation starts needs to be watched. CPEC will become a conduit for mainstreaming balochistan and provide economic benefits to people who have been deprived since independence. Government have to insure inclusive development for a better future for Pakistan.

Virkaul | 9 years ago | Reply Directionless news story that doesnot convey anything. First, the reporter filing this story must understand that LNG stands for Liquified Natural Gas. Methane or natural gas is liquified only for storage and transportation purposes to save space. Liquefaction of methane requires high pressure compression coupled with lowering temperatures to subzero levels through refrigeration. During transportation or distribution in pipelines, it is always compressed natural gas (CNG). Having said that it is clear, LNG can not be transported in pipelines from China. The other thing is China is not a country that produces natural gas but imports it. Currently, all imports happen through Melaka strait to its eastern ports. What then is the point in transporting it through pipelines from Shanghai to Kashgar and then to Islamabad and Lahore? You must employ some reporters possessing technical knowledge who would file technically correct reports.
