GILGIT/ KOHISTAN: The Gilgit-Baltistan police arrested a man and seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from his possession, averting a terrorist activity meant to push the region into anarchy before the commencement of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project, said officials. Acting upon intelligence information, the police raided a house and arrested the suspect, said a police official on Monday.
The man was a resident of Gilgit’s Skarkoi area and brother of an arms dealer, he added.
According to officials, vital information is expected to be received from the man during interrogation as G-B government had already been warned of possible terrorist activity to sabotage the economic project between Pakistan and China. “More than a dozen Kalashnikovs, pistols and bullets have been seized from the militant,” confirmed a police official.
Uniform activities
The G-B police also carried out another raid during which army and police uniforms were found at a raw material store.
According to station police officer Zahoor Ahmed, the raid was conducted as part of a plan that was devised to keep a check to prevent terrorist activity. “Cases have been registered against the culprits,” added Ahmed.
A report from the interior ministry recently warned the G-B government to tighten security to avert threats sponsored by neighbouring agents.
CM office special power line
On the chief minister’s orders, a special line supplying uninterrupted power to the chief minister house has been removed. Now Hafeezur Rahman will have as much electricity as any other person in the city gets.
“The step was meant to discourage VIP culture in the region as was promised by the CM after taking oath to his office last week,” said a spokesman of the CM.
KKH under threat
In a raid, the Kohistan police rounded up a man and recovered arms and ammunition from his possession at Karakoram Highway (KKH) near Patan area on Sunday. Kohistan district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa borders Diamer and Ghizer valleys of G-B.
According to the police, the arms were to be used for terrorist attacks on KKH.
Lower Kohistan DPO Muhammad Irshad told the media on Monday that a police party guarding Matti check post in the early hours of Monday stopped a silver coloured car.
However, the driver sped away and opened fire at the police. Two individuals left the car at some distance and fled for cover in the forest, however, the police arrested them. They were later identified as Mulla Waldain and Abdul Salam. Their accomplice managed to escape. The police found six rocket launchers, six fuses, an RPG and two mobile phones, and impounded the car.
According to Diamer Deputy Commissioner Usman Ahmed, “To ensure passengers’ security, traffic will not be allowed after 4pm on Babusar.” The pass that connects Chilas on KKH to Kaghan in K-P.
He said on Monday that vehicles coming from Islamabad will have to cross Naran before 4pm. Similarly, those travelling from Gilgit to Islamabad by Babusar will have to cross Chilas check post before the given time.
“It should be noted that buses, coasters and foreign tourists are not allowed to travel by this route.”
