The central library of the Punjab University (PU) has attained the distinction of being the first public varsity to launch a state-of-the-art Integrated Multilingual Library Information Management System, Chief Librarian Haseeb Ahmad Piracha said on Sunday.


He said the system functions include Unicode-based multilingual support for library materials in English and oriental languages, adoption of international standards Marc 21 and ACCR2, client-server-based architecture, user-friendly interface, supporting authority files of personal names, corporate bodies, subject headings, names of series, providing a budgeting system, one-window operation for all major circulations, multilingual web OPAC, onscreen keyboards for Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Sindhi and Pashto among other languages, printing barcode labels and miscellaneous reports and facilitating data sharing and management of branch libraries.
