LAHORE:

Acting is a road oft-traversed by those who are part of the modelling industry. Where Mehreen Syed forayed into film with Chambaili, Aamna Ilyas had a good run with her role in Zinda Bhaag. But for ace model Tooba Siddiqui, acting isn’t a new flame. Known for her roles in television dramas Noor Bano and Vasal, she is soon going to be seen on the silver screen. The Express Tribune talks to Tooba to explore what tricks she has up her sleeve.

Tooba reveals that she will be seen in the song Jannan Jannan from Yasir Nawaz’s upcoming film Wrong Number. The song is slated for release later this week. Of her stint in the film, she says, “I will make a special appearance in the romantic number opposite Danish Taimoor, who’s the lead actor in the film.” The song is a filmi one that will feature Tooba in a glamorous look but is mediocre, both in terms of lyrics and picturisation. The model-actor shares she will take up a couple of films this year, which will be officially announced soon. “You’ll probably see me on the big screen over the small screen,” she states.

After a short hiatus, during which she moved to Dubai, she has managed to maintain a presence in the local fashion scene. “Although acting was always a part of me, I’d call myself a model first,” says Tooba. Contrary to popular belief, Tooba feels her marriage, now four-years-old, didn’t affect her career and that it was just her move abroad that didn’t allow her to be actively involved in the entertainment industry. “I’m back in Pakistan now and the industry, and will continue working,” she states.

Although Tooba has been walking local ramps for a while, her fans have felt her absence at some recent shows. She shares that this is simply because she has become more selective about what shows she will walk in. “I’ll only do exclusive fashion weeks now, the last of which was Pakistan Sunsilk Fashion Week and Telenor Fashion Pakistan Week 2015.”

Tooba, who began her modelling career in Islamabad in 2001 with a charity fashion show for Tariq Amin, ultimately moved to Karachi to continue with further projects. “I was extremely ambitious and willing to shift if that’s what it took,” she admits.

She recently travelled to Turkey along with other members of the film fraternity for the launch of a new Pakistani channel in the country. They took the trip to appear on Maria Wasti’s morning show Sunrise from Turkey, which will be one of the key programmes on the channel. Of her experience, Tooba states, “It was great fun being there with everyone.”

Tooba seems thrilled to share her travelling experiences over the years and how she has built lifelong friendships in the industry. “I’ve worked with everyone, from Ather Shahzad to Khawar Riaz, and am not inclined towards sticking to a particular clan,” she says. “The industry has progressed over the past few years since the media has evolved. There are a lot of new things that have emerged to the fore now and I’m slowly getting used to them.”
