212 organisations formally banned by Pakistan

171 outfits declared as proscribed by foreign affairs ministry, 60 by interior ministry; JuD put on watch list

ISLAMABAD: In a rare move, Pakistan has formally declared 212 outfits as proscribed organisations, as per exclusive documents obtained by The Express Tribune, which were presented to the Supreme Court earlier this week.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs banned 171 organisations, while the Interior Ministry banned 60 more organisations. Meanwhile, Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) has been put on the watch list by the interior ministry

JuD, a charity run by Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, is allegedly the front for the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant outfit. India blames JuD for masterminding the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

Earlier this year, Pakistan decided to ban the Haqqani Network, JuD and 10 more organisations in a move described by security analysts as a ‘paradigm shift’ in the country’s security policy.

Ten organisations have been declared as proscribed by both ministried. The organisations are as follows:

1) Lashkar-e-Jhangvi

2) Jaish-e-Muhammad

3) Lashkar-e-Tayyiba

4) Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan

5) Jamiat-ul-Furqan

6) Ansar-ul-Islam

7) Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan

8) Rabita Trust

9) Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement

10) Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan

Sandip | 9 years ago | Reply @Aisha: Given your nation's extremely limited capacity, both materially and intellectually, it's best if you spend your limited resources on analyzing and fixing your own problems. Any attempt to analyse problems that India may or may not have will only result in specious opinions that you are providing.

You may be several times our size in population and size, and I fear that as a result the size of your megalomaniac thoughts and the delusions of grandeur are of the same proportions.That is a bigger problem for you. As for us, the PK government has issues against NGOs implicated in suspect activities, and despite the public buckling down, the government has 1001 little ways of stopping them from working in the country.

So much so for Pakistan's sovereignty I hope this response is enough to cure your delusion?

Milind | 9 years ago | Reply Strange how Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement is also banned. Looks like Pakistani Govt buckled under Chinese pressure, or no longer cares about the 'oppressed Muslim brothers' in China (no Ramzan & hijabs, beer festival etc.)

Jawad U Rahman | 9 years ago | Reply These statistics give away what ails Pakistan. The Foreign Ministry bans 171 organizations, while the Interior Ministry bans 62 organizations. So, while Pakistan wants the rest of the World know there are these 171 'bad' entities in Pakistan, the people of Pakistan are protected only from 62 of those by the Interior Ministry and the Law Enforcement Agencies. The other 109 can operate in broad day light within the territory of Pakistan. This double standard will only hurt Pakistan itself and no one else.

Q D B | 9 years ago | Reply This is an old list, there are no new organisations added. Even JUD, which the whole world is going on about, was added in 2003 (to watch list - not formally banned) Congratulations Pakistan! You release a list which is at least 2 years old and people celebrate!

Sandip | 9 years ago | Reply So Pakistan wants the world to believe that LeT is a proscribed organization yet it's founder, chief ideologue and chief is an esteemed guest on many a Pakistani TV channel in full view of Pakistani authorities, with many of Pakistan's high and mighty sharing dias with this man. Do we sense something identical between this case and the OBL case? It is this duplicity of the Pakistanis that makes people the world over scoff at anything that the Pakistanis claim. And please, don't trouble us with the rubbish that the terrorist hafiz saeed has nothing to do with LeT anymore.
