FAISALABAD:

Scores of sugarcane growers in Jaranwala on Wednesday staged a protest demonstration against the administrations of sugar mills for not paying them for their produce.

The protesters gathered in front of sugar mills and staged a protest there.

Talking to newsmen, Ansar Tarar, one of the protesters, said sugar mills owed them millions of rupees. “We have asked mill owners a number of times to pay us but they have not done so,” he said.  He said the farmers had been unable to buy seeds, fertilisers and pesticides for the next crop. “Tarar said if mill owners did not pay, they would stage a hunger strike in front of the mills.  Later, a representative of a sugar mill met the farmers and assured them that they would be paid soon. The protesters dispersed on receiving the assurance.
