NEW YORK: The United Nations has urged Pakistan and India to take steps to ease the continued tensions between themselves, Radio Pakistan reported on Thursday.

UN Associate spokesperson Farhan Haq during a briefing in New York stated that it is essential for the neighbouring countries to take steps to ease tensions and try to resolve bilateral issues peacefully and amicably.

Earlier, the United States, while declining to comment on India’s surgical strikes on militants in Myanmar, asked India and Pakistan to resume dialogue in order to reduce tension in the region.

Modi, in his recent visit to Bangladesh, not only accused Pakistan of spreading terrorism in India but also admitted that India had played a part in the break-up of Pakistan in 1971.

The expressions of virulence and Modi's remarks against Pakistan elicited a scathing reaction from several political and religious parties, who took took to the streets in protests.

devesh | 9 years ago | Reply @Ibrar: Really you believe what you said? I don't see you mentioning 95k Pakistani soldiers surrendering and India not taking advantage of that except freeing Bangladesh. Now coming to Kargil. I acknowledge that your army caught Indian army by surprise. But indian Army and airforce could kill intruders wiith impunity. Your Army could recognize recently that killed were Pakistani soldiers. What kind of nation that disown its own soldiers at first instance. Now take instance of Bombay. Yes Mumbai police was not upto mark. But what ever Pakistani terrorist did, Pakistan paid very heavy prize even if you don"t realize. I strongly believe that we should be nation loving but rational as well because that what is going to benefit our nation.

I have still not understood why people nurture personal hatred for someone, a people or a country with whom they have never had a direct contact. One may dislike individuals - avoid their contact, you may dislike ideas - avoid paying attention to those. But hatred, in today's interlinked world? How can an idea, a thought or an ideology be greater than a human life. How can one kill for something as abstract as a religion? Reading some many of the extreme comments, I have difficulty understanding the underlying hatred.

If you think your personal visceral hatred of India, Indians and Hindus (bunnyaz) and it's display will get Pakistan out of the quagmire - go ahead, do a collective rant. It will only work for India. Hate has brought you thus far, hate will take you to the end. As to why Indians (I am not one) write on Pakistani sites? You write something about India and that too negative - don't be surprised to find a wave of 1.2B hit you. Stop trying to hold India back, think positive and try to uplift Pakistan. Glad that you know we hate you but your fears still keep bringing you to this site ...perhaps just to know what we are inclined to do to you tomorrow. You are a big pooh elephant only messing around with the environment and dirtying your Ganges...but remember an ant has to do nothing more than scratching your asz and blister you to death. Yes there is a strict defence parity....even the most provocative attacks on you, for which you blamed us, your forces could only March and remain your side of the border(following attack on parliament) and stay their for a year without daring to fire a single shot. This was despite Pak army was largely engaged on the Afghan side. And your defence is so rudimentary that even a bunch of poorly armed non state boys can travel in a make shift kind boat, arrive at your financial capital and send you into a state of total chaos. It took days before your so called elite forces could handle the situation. Know that you are only good at firing at the Kashmiris, molest their women, gangrape your own nuns in their 70s and burning Samjhota express. Shame on you, you only qualify as unfortunate worst humans in our eyes. You are a bunch of liars with a Bollywood driven mindset , pakora & jalibi trading bunnyaz, in return for access to or stealing western tech making products as if created in India. And who told you India is still important in afghan matters other than trade once you can find a sensible route. I liked your admission that you are still friends with China and that despite your historic and spectacular rout....but that is what your national character is....once the other guy hits you and shows you what you are you start friendly crawling or walking on your knees. China knows the kind of tricks your leadership plays , so they have out rightly refused your request not to run CPEC through Pakistan as Chinese must see that as a final step to complete the encirclement loop around you. But again Americans remember how we assisted them to become the only power on the planet ...it would take long long Indian propaganda for them to forget our favours ...particularly when they realise that in return for fighting their battles Pakistan landed with the menace of terrorism which it is still fighting. Reality | 9 years ago | Reply Every war with India by pakistan was triggered by Pakistan. Pakistanis very well know the fact that Sialkot and Lahore could easily have been occupied in 65 and 71. Added to that was terror sponsor in Kashmir, India Punjab, Mumbai killings, Kargil and the list goes on. Pakistan from very day of partition created hype and false impression as India being the bully while its the other way round. Hence UN kind of underplays Pakistan and its protests and asks Pakistan to settle disputes with India. Pakistan never existed 67 years ago. Entire land was called British India. So for all Pakistanis that have venom on India, at one point of time you all were Indians too. That's the reality.

You believe everything, don't you? Besides, by the time Rajiv "Ghandi" came on the scene, Khalistan was a speck in India's 5000 year old history. The Trouble in Indian Punjab was the work of ISI and the Indians saw through it in the right time. The Khalistanis are still very active in Pakistan, still on the dole of the ISI. For India, it was a rough period but then what does an elephant feel of an ant bite - well an ant bite. What happens to the ant - it gets crushed. In spite of such a huge population and a complex mix of religious flavors (including a 15% Muslim share), India is trudging along nicely. A very long way to go, but trudging along. It has good working relationship with China - in spite of the border issue, working relationship with all the neighbors bar one and India also has very good relationship with Iran, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia (if it has escaped your attention - all three acclaimed Muslim nations). I think Pakistan got off to a bad start - as the national narrative was full of hate, hate for the Hindus, Jews, Christians and then came the Quadanis, the Shia , the Barelvis ... and the misery continues. Hate as a base for nation building is a big no-no. There is and will be no defense parity. The Nukes have and will lull you to a false sense parity. They are not for such densely populated landmass as South Asia, unless of course you are willing to a huge loss of own population, even when you use your "tactical assets". What frame of mind would or should a leadership be in if it's willing to char its own people with nukes on the "pretense" of harming the other side (you will notice - I did not say enemy). And hence, the disparity will exist. As far as the battle hardened army goes, beating the life out of its own people and chasing a few terrorists has never battle hardened an army. For that matter, the Punjabi Muslim soldier has never ever won any big battle nor was he amongst the ruling elements - irrespective of the false claim by your historians. The average Muslim of "Indian extraction, including the Punjabi" suffered as much under the Turkic, Irania, Arabic and Afghan marauders as the non Muslims. As for giving India a blue eye, have you looked around and seen the political, social and economic state of Pakistan? You think India will be static and do nothing about the blue eye? Don't you think friendship with India will be a better proposition?

We will wait until an opportunity arises, just as it did for you for wrong reasons. You narrowly escaped from Punjab insurgency thanks to the Pak government refusing basis to operate as a favour to Rajiv Ghandi. That agenda is still there for the proud people of East Punjab. Given the now defence parity Iinthe region there will be many ways to assist should such a situation arise. Pakistan' difficult time is nearly over and we are emerging as a hardened nation giving you a blue eye when required.

Ibrar | 9 years ago | Reply Interesting that despite the world recognising this long standing point of tension with a potential to escalate is being ignored for decades. The two dangerously armed parties are being left on their own to sort things with no hope. It is about time that the Kashmir issue is now taken out of current bilateral deadlock and resolved without delay.
