Rossi has led the world championship since the start of the season but Lorenzo has won three races on the spin, including last time out in Rossi’s Mugello backyard.
The Italian was third on his home track and his lead is now just six points in the standings.
“I love Barcelona, this is one of my favourite tracks,” said Rossi, who triumphed at the circuit in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009.
Lorenzo hopes to add to his wins in 2010, 2012 and 2013 and overtake nine-time champion Rossi.
Meanwhile, fifth-placed defending champion Marc Marquez heads to his home race, where he won last year, still looking for the blistering form which took him to the title in 2014.
