Three PAF JF-17s to participate in Paris Air Show 2015

ISLAMABAD: A three-ship formation of JF-17 Thunders along with a PAF contingent comprising pilots and technicians are set to participate in the upcoming Paris Air Show 2015.

The contingent departed for Paris on Sunday.

The 51st Air Show, organised by the French Aerospace Industries Association, is starting on June 15 at the Le Bourget Parc des Expositions and will continue till June 21.

According to a PAF statement, one JF-17 aircraft would perform in the flying display, while another would be on static display throughout the air show.

The JF-17 aircraft has previously participated in various air shows around the world, including Farnborough Air Show (in the UK), Zhuhai Air Show (China), Turkish Air Show (Turkey) and the Dubai Air Show (UAE).

It is a lightweight multi-role aircraft jointly developed by PAF and China Aero-technology Import Export Corporation (CATIC) and co-produced by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and CATIC.

It was announced earlier during the year that China would deliver another 50 JF-17 Thunder fighters to Pakistan over a period of three years.

During a recent visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Pakistan, it was asserted by both sides that the jets were a symbol of friendship between the two countries.

JF-17 speed of Mach 1.5 is its Achilles heel since for good interception speed is an important criteria comparing with its arch rival IAF fighters namely Su-30MKI, Mig-29S, Mirage-2000H having higher speed of Mach 2+. Even in close combat, JF-17 lacks what it takes to win the fight and is rated below or just average. Its spine and wings bearings neither have wing twist nor enough area to provide low wing loading. Its performance during low speeds and high alpha would be very dangerous for the pilot indeed. Its thrust to weight ratio is a negative point as it has a maximum G loading of point 8 only. India rejected Tejas due to low thrust to weight ratio which incidentally was more than JF-17. In the end, it is all about saving ones motherland from the enemy which JF-17 meets most requirements of the PAF.

Nafarmaan pilot | 9 years ago | Reply Can anyone ask them why did their aircraft crash ...killing pilot. Even with faulty design they kept on flying it ..endangering lives of their young pilots. It Shows the level of professionalism....and the responsibility towards safety of their pilots. By the way there is no dual seat version of this advanced aircraft. The level of seriousness of this project can be guaged by the fact that Chinese air force is not flying these aircraft. Sleep tight...cause we have the battle on power point presentations....

shahid | 9 years ago | Reply It is the ECMs, BVRs, AESA radars, cruise missiles and multi functional weapon systems with aerial refueling capability which makes your platform lethal, its not the Mach 2 speed or Mach 3 speeds.. These speeds are used to run away from the aerial battle field. The Mach 1.5 is more than enough for any platform as long as they are equipped with above systems. If enemy admirers feel they have faster and the most fast flier platforms, then be Happy Flying, we look for Happy Hunting. If the Jf-17 can fly, it can kill too; as these are fitted with above systems and are vicious killers. It is the flying life cycle time which is important as JF-17 has the best weight to thrust ratio and lowest stress on engine metallurgy. It has longer flying hours and have large gaps between major overhauls with fairly low maintenance costs. Survivability is key to success, and JF-17 is a survivor.. Not comparing to any of the floating platforms of my enemy, it is crucial to have better ECM and other systems on board.

Anyway, with government and private sector funding on science and technology ( including R&D) close to nil, don't expect anything happening anytime in our future. In Pakistan, everyone and their uncle wants to be a banker, but a scientist or engineer, forget it !

Greater speed, better weaponry and avionics will win the day. However, if what is envisioned is some sort of Kamikazee operation for these planes, then I guess they do serve a purpose...

Chachoo | 9 years ago | Reply A proud moment for me will be when Our AirForce will announce that they have started producing Jet engines, Avionic sets, radars and BVRs for the aircraft locally. At present we are dependent on other countries in acquiring critical components. JF17 production is a beginning in my view. We have a long way to go. Indigenous development of the components is very important in my view.

Ibrar | 9 years ago | Reply @Last Word: Me too remember that with in few hours of Indian Air Force coming into action during Kargil conflict Five(5) frontline state of the art planes were shot down by Pakistan air defence system as they flew over the LOC. The news was flashed both by Indian and Pak media and as expected the Indians were hugely embarrassed at their loss. I guess these planes were blessed with a more than 2 Mach . The point is that although speed is important but only one aspect !

As I know this plane is an amalgam of multiple copies and it is likely that 30 years delay has resulted from failure of giving it a final Indian ID.

Rafidi | 9 years ago | Reply You do realize that once a dogfight starts, aircraft that can maneuver at lower sub-Mach 2 speeds have an advantage over aircraft that perform optimally at higher speeds because they can out-maneuver their adversaries due to their tighter turning radius. Case in point being North Vietnamese Migs over Vietnam or the Royal Navy Harriers over the Falklands. In both these cases these aircraft tended to operate at subsonic speeds and that gave them a distinct advantage over their faster opponents like the American F-4 Phantoms.

Last Word | 9 years ago | Reply I am reminded of the article 'JF Thunder or Blunder' published in ET about three years back which has proved to be true. Pakistan spent billions on the manufacture of this obsolete Chinese aircraft but not a single aircraft could be sold so far and even being a modern jet its speed of 1.5 mach makes it as a sitting duck in front of aircrafts from across the border with 2 mach and more.
