ISLAMABAD: President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko arrived Islamabad on Thursday on a two-day state visit, Radio Pakistan reported.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif welcomed Lukashenko at the Nur Khan Airbase, and a 21-gun salute was presented as his plane landed.

Due to arrive earlier this week at the request of President Mamnoon Hussain, he delayed his trip due to the death of his mother.

The trip marks the first ever visit by a Belarusian president to Pakistan.

A series of official talks will be held between Nawaz and the Belarus delegation, followed by a luncheon and a banquet in honour of the visiting dignitary.

Due to the friendly relations between Pakistan and Belarus, a resident mission was established by Belarus in Islamabad in November 2014.

President Lukashenko's visit is likely to help in strengthening the existing ties between the two countries.
