KARACHI: At a time when the economy is going through a revival phase, the business community expects a budget that can further strengthen the economy and attract foreign direct investment (FDI) into the country, said Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) President Mian Adrees on Monday.

“Foreign investment, particularly from China, is expected to come in and this optimism must grow in coming months and years,” he said.

“In this scenario, our country cannot afford any ruthless measures in the forthcoming budget, which may discourage FDI, businesses and trade activities. Moreover, there is a need to ensure protection of foreign investment and creation of friendly atmosphere for the business community.”

Adrees said the business community considered the PML-N government a business, trade and investment-friendly administration but this year there were some worries about the upcoming budget.

He called the business community the real stakeholders that were reeling under the burden of different levies and said they would not be able to afford any new tax burden.

He said being the FPCCI chief, it was his moral duty to suggest measures for the betterment of economy. “It seems there is a feeling of frustration in the business community about the budget and any anti-business and trade budget may be rejected by them.”

He asked the government to consider the proposals of the business community, who were the real taxpayers, and requested Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to present a business-friendly budget.
