PAT central president Raheeq Abbasi said they would protest against the JIT investigation because, “each sentence in it is based on lies”.

LAHORE: Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) announced on Friday countrywide protests against a Joint Investigation Team’s (JIT) report on Model Town incident.

On June 17, 2014, at least 14 workers of Dr Tahirul Qadri’s party were killed and 90 were in injured in clashes with police in Model Town, Lahore.

A joint investigation team probing the deadly clashes held 10 police officers responsible, while giving a clean chit to the prime minister and the Punjab chief minister.

Addressing a press conference in Lahore on Friday PAT Central President Dr Raheeq Abbasi said the findings of the report are completely false and the party would be holding protests as a result.

“The JIT protected the killers instead of dispensing justice to the bereaved families,” Abbasi said, adding that the party has lost hope that justice will be served.

The PAT central president declared Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Rana Sanaullah as the real perpetrators behind the attack.

“The chief minister admitted before the judicial commission that he was informed about the incident after 11am and that he had ordered police to retreat but the JIT claims that the chief minister had no link with the incident.”

“Rana Sanaullah also told the judicial commission that he presided over the meeting on June 16 to remove barriers from around PAT secretariat but the JIT report has totally disassociated him from the incident,” Abbasi said.

Abbasi demanded the government to constitute an impartial JIT as promised during sit-ins staged by PAT. He said no police official should be a member of JIT.

“The accused should be tried in a military court,” Abbasi said, adding that thousands of ‘fake cases’ registered against PAT activists should also be put before the impartial JIT.

The PAT central president said they will approach European Union, ambassadors of different countries and international rights organizations to take up the case.
