Arts Council: SHC issues contempt notices

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday issued contempt-of-court notices to officials of the Arts Council of Pakistan over its refusal to follow court orders.

The court had issued orders that the council’s treasurer be given access to the records and accounts. The SHC’s Justice Maqbool Baqar, earlier, heard the lawyer for the petitioner, Najmuddin Shaikh, who submitted that a bench of the SHC had passed an order in his plea and directed the honorary secretary and other respondents to allow the petitioner to function as the treasurer and allow him access to records and accounts.

According to the petitioner, the council’s officials, including vice president Prof Ejaz Farooqui, honorary secretary Ahmed Shah and executive director Feroz Ahmed, refused to obey the orders and their denial constituted contempt of court. The bench issued show-cause notices on the charge of contempt of court for December 14.
