My husband confessed under duress, wife of alleged 'RAW agent' tells SHC

Petitioner says husband was subjected to torture; forced to make confessional statement at Rao Anwar press conference

KARACHI: The family of a Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) worker, Rehan Tahir, has requested the Sindh High Court (SHC) to order an inquiry into his confessional statement regarding his association with Indian intelligence agency, RAW.

Najma Tahir, wife of the suspect, petitioned the court against the Sindh home secretary, IG police, SSP Rao Anwar and others.

The petitioner said law enforcers had arrested him near MukkaChowk in the surroundings of Azizabad on February 24. Later, however, SSP Rao said that they had arrested her husband on April 30. The police officer claimed that Tahir was associated with the Indian spy agency, RAW. Police claimed the RAW had trained the MQM worker to carry out criminal activities in Karachi.

However, Tahir's wife alleged that her husband was subjected to torture in custody and forced to make a confessional statement before the media during Anwar’s press conference.

Najma has requested the court to order medical examination of the suspect to prove the torture he suffered. She has sought an inquiry into the confessional statement of Tahir regarding his association with RAW.

The trial court has already remanded Rehan Tahir to the custody of law enforcers for interrogation till May 13.

syed & syed | 9 years ago | Reply He will remain in custody till at least 13th may which is long time to get any statement from him. Believe me if Zardari is handed over to police custody he will confess killing BB and Murtaza and many more revelations. It is Court to decide not Rao Anwar. Rao himself a suspicious creature.

Someone | 9 years ago | Reply How would the wife know he's not a RAW agent? Was she with him when he was carrying out the target killings? Was she procuring arms and going around putting people in bori bags? If so, try her in the court too. If not, she obviously doesn't know and would say anything to defend her husband. Let the courts do their job and probe the allegations. Statement by a family member of Indian call centre nerds on ET won't change anything..

Loyal | 9 years ago | Reply Hope that he gets a fair trial. There have been several misrepresentations from Police and Rao Anwar about the case which render the credibility of these confessional statements in doubt. Hope sense and equity will prevail.
