Gandhi’s sex life

April 24, 2010

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to a book that has been recently released apparently detailing Gandhi’s sex life. May I ask what is the point in demonising someone who – at least for Indians – is clearly a national hero? What purpose will this serve? The Mahatma died 62 years ago, and his life is part of Indian history and myth.

After all we have white washed the life of Jinnah with our own view of an ideal Muslim who did no wrong. The bits about him wanting to originally be a Shakespearian actor, while we at the moment are preceding over a period when the arts and culture are facing challenges from every front. His drinking habits for example is conveniently forgotten along with his lack of patience fore religious ceremony. Most importantly he made it quite clear that he did not want to be remembered by any title, he would have hated the title "Quaid-E-Azam". all been conveniently omitted from our history. Or the fact that he was a supreme constitutionalists who would have abhorred any form of military intervention. We get our kicks by putting people down. At least India knows a little bit more about one of their founding fathers, for better or for worse. We have not only forgotten the reality of ours but allowed the powers to be to twist and mould his memory to suit their own purposes.

What is a point in demonising the Qadyani chief Mirza ghulam who is at least a hero for Ahmedis ? or what is the point of ridiculing Bal Tharkey who is hero for Maharashtrans ?
