LAHORE:

The Fisheries Department is planning to launch a degree programme with the aim to boost the fisheries industry, Fisheries Director General Muhammad Ayub told the APP on Sunday.

He said the department already offered a six-month diploma to educate fish farmers regarding modern methods and next generation fish farming techniques. The DG said students pursuing a degree in the discipline would have to complete the introductory six-month course. “The idea is to encourage production of export-quality fish to increase foreign exchange,” he said.

The department has been providing technical assistance to fish farmers regarding investment in the fisheries sector under public-private partnership, the DG said. He said the provincial government had extended complete support to the establishment of an aquaculture technology park and an export processing zone to facilitate the private sector in exporting fish products.

He said the department had taken several initiatives to bring researchers, scientists, fish farmers and fish traders on a platform in order to solve their problems in a scientific manner.
