Scores of supporters of National Assembly Member Jamhsed Dasti on Sunday blocked Pul Daat and staged a sit-in to protest plans to change the Pakistan-China trade route.
The workers travelled from Muzaffargarh on buses arranged by Dasti.
Addressing the protesters, Dasti said benefits of agreements signed with China should be enjoyed by all citizens. He said that by changing the route, the government was denying the people of Dera Ghazi Khan prosperity and progress. He said the anti-people policies of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government would not be tolerated.
“Tribal leaders are not fit to represent the people,” he said. “They should have been here with me today and demanded that the government not ignore thousands of farmers and workers of the region.”
“The government claims that it wants to promote development, but it is only limited to Lahore,” he said. He said the government had neglected Dera Ghazi Khan for a very long time.
“Dera Ghazi Khan connects all provinces of the country,” he said. “How can the government ignore such an important district?”
He said the PML-N was conspiring against the people of south Punjab. “The problems of Seraiki people have always been secondary to the PML-N. The PML-N leaders in Dera Ghazi Khan are apathetic and have no idea what the problems of the people are.”
He said the government had not announced any special development package for the people of south Punjab and was systematically depriving the region of development opportunities.
