Torrential rain: Govt issues compensation cheques

PESHAWAR: The district administrations of Peshawar, Nowshera and Charsadda have issued 25 compensation cheques to families of people who died in the ‘mini-cyclone’ that hit parts of the province on Sunday evening. As many as 47 people were killed and more than 200 were injured in the disaster while over 150 houses and several acres of standing crops were damaged or destroyed. According to a handout issued by information department on Wednesday, cheques of Rs300,000 each have been issued to 25 families of deceased victims. The handout stated a total of Rs7.5 million was doled out in compensation; 12 cheques were distributed in Peshawar, seven in Nowshera and six in Charsadda. Financial compensation cheques for the remaining affected families will be issued soon, it added.
